World peace has been a long-sought goal of humankind. Yet as thousands of years of human history have demonstrated, nothing thus far has been successful in creating lasting peace—not military force, peace treaties, diplomacy, nor educational programs.

Is peace inherently unachievable? No. These traditional approaches have failed only because they have not gone to the root of the problem. Just as the buildup of stress and tension in the mind and body can lead to outbursts of anger and physical aggression, so too can stress and tension accumulate in the social fabric of society and lead to outbursts of terrorism and war. The key in both cases is to neutralize accumulated stress and tension, thereby preventing violence from occurring in the first place.

This is the Vedic approach to peace put forward by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. This approach rests on the understanding that the foundation of peace and harmony resides within the individual in the field of pure, silent consciousness at the basis of all mental activity. Maharishi’s Vedic approach to peace also provides a simple, natural technology—the Transcendental Meditation and TM -Sidhi programs, including Yogic Flying—that allows anyone to dive within and experience and awaken this field.

Finally, the Vedic approach to peace takes advantage of field effects of consciousness, parallel to the field effects described in quantum physics, by which groups of people practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM -Sidhi programs enliven waves of peace throughout society. As extensive scientific research has demonstrated, such peace-creating groups have reduced crime, violence, terrorism, and warfare along with creating improved quality of life in all parts of the world, at every scale of society. This phenomenon, known as the Maharishi Effect, has been demonstrated in cities, states, and countries, multi-country regions, and the world as a whole.

This volume presents the most compelling national and international research studies on the Maharishi Effect and explores the theoretical understanding of its underlying principles and mechanics.
